Halifax Board of Health Agent
The Health Agent exercises independent judgment and initiative for overseeing the enforcement of all applicable federal, state, and local codes, regulations, policies, laws, and bylaws pertaining to public health, under the general guidance of the Board of Health. Some of these duties include housing, food establishments, septic systems, soil evaluation, beaches, semi-public and public pools, air quality, lead, rabies, tobacco control, nuisances, oversight of landfills, and camps.
This position splits its duties between an office-based job in a dynamic municipal setting, and off-site field work to conduct inspections, witness perc tests, initiate enforcement actions, and educate the public.
A Bachelor’s degree is required. Numerous certifications are required: Soil Evaluator, Food Safety Manager, training in the State Sanitary Code. It is preferred that the candidate already be a Certified Health Officer or Registered Sanitarian. If the candidate is not, the candidate must be willing and able to become one within one year. Must enjoy learning, as it is continuous. Excellent communication skills required.
This is a salaried full-time position with a pay range of $67,399 at step one, to $76,817 at step 6. The beginning salary will be based on experience and qualifications.
